The Dream As Compost: A Special Dream Essay For Earth Day
There is so much richness in the poem “This Compost,” by Walt Whitman. Whitman uses the compost metaphor beautifully. Perhaps you can relate to the natural cycling process that he walks us through. It speaks to me personally, reflecting my inner landscape and experience with dreamwork. It also points to a natural journey we all experience as humans on this earth.

June is a month we celebrate Father’s Day…and how often we see in dreams male figures that come in many ways…fatherly, manly, frightening, challenging, dismissive and more. When we step into a dream we explore these figures to see what it is they want us to feel…feelings often hidden under the surface story of the dream.

As an expressive arts therapist, I experienced other Gestalt approaches that bring to life and dialogue with imagery, so I was expecting the 5-D work to feel somewhat familiar. Yet, I anticipated that the fully embodied 5-D work would be much more vulnerable than a Zoom dream session in which I can feel somewhat shielded by the laptop screen.

Our hearts and minds have great capacity for aliveness, but we sometimes (or often) betray ourselves with addictions, rationalizations, dissociations and willful looking away. In this sense of the word sleep, the poetic injunction, don’t go back to sleep is most powerful.Ironically, one of the greatest vehicles for waking up is our dreams.
